“You Should Know” was a difficult song to write—not only because some of the lyrics are my story but because there’s just so much I want people who are not gay to know. And that was impossible to squeeze into one song. So, while keeping it brief, I wanted to share a little more about the subject here.
First, having a bi or homosexual orientation is not a choice. As so many others have said, who wakes up one day and just decides to be attracted to their own gender...to be “not normal,” to face things like discrimination, awkwardness, minority, bullying, perpetual singleness, and in some cases—even in these modern times—disdain, rejection, being thrown out of the house, and physical abuse?! Being gay in some countries is even punishable by imprisonment or death.
LGBT people are at higher risk than heterosexuals for depression, eating disorders, and suicide. And this should come as no surprise—especially for those growing up in conservative places. Try dealing with the misconception that every day you’re alive makes God angry because of your gender attraction!
Personally I believe that genetics factor in, and there is some research on this issue. Further, if being gay is a result of society, environment, father issues, etc. then nearly everyone would be gay. And it’s more than just humans: Biologists have documented homosexual behavior in more than 450 species.
We’re not all perverts, child molesters, or degenerates. We’re not all a butch or queeny, democrats or republicans, or have some sinister agenda. Our outlooks, opinions, and values all differ. We’re as different among each other as straight people.
One can be homosexual and be a Christian.
